Installing a start-stop button to start the engine instead of the ignition switch with your own hands. How to make a start button instead of an ignition key in a car with your own hands Do-it-yourself ignition from a VAZ 2106 button

Today in modern cars Often there is a system that allows you to start a car from the Start Engine button. This option allows you to do away with the ignition switch, and starting the engine becomes simpler and more convenient.

In this article we will look at installing a universal kit costing 1,200 rubles, which is suitable for most cars. In a specific example, it will be installed on an OKU, VAZ 1111.

Buy a start stop button (start stop engine)

The button discussed in this example (and shown in the video below) costs 1200 rubles and you can buy it using the link to aliexpress: http://ali.pub/1qcg1t

Kit contents, functions and characteristics

The kit includes:

  • Control block
  • Engine start button
  • radio frequency (RFID) key tag 2 pcs.
  • electromagnetic ring for reading magnetic key
  • Connection diagram of the control unit to the vehicle's electrical wiring

The control unit has two levels of protection built into it. Without a key (tag), it is impossible to turn on the ignition. And without pressing the brake pedal, it will not be possible to start the car engine. This is done so that you do not accidentally start the car while it is left in gear.

The button can operate in two modes. When the brake pedal is depressed and pressed briefly, the starter is turned on for a second. This is enough to start a working engine. When pressed for a long time, the starter turns on until you release the button. This is necessary for starting in the cold season.

If, when you have the key, you do not press the brake pedal, then pressing the button turns on the car’s ignition, this is necessary so that you can turn on any electrical equipment of the car.

Also for the forgetful, when the ignition is turned off and the key is left in the ring, the control unit signals this.

Installing the engine start button yourself

The button itself has a convenient fastening, so it can be placed in any place you like, you just need to cut the required hole.

To connect the wires, you need to connect the cable from the control unit to the standard electrical wiring of the car

The OKA Car (1111 and 1113) has an ignition switch from the ninth family (VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099) and the connection of this kit will be similar for all these cars.

According to the diagram included in the kit, you need to connect + 12V and - to the control unit. The wire coming from the unit to the starter must be connected to connector 5 of the chip (red wire). The ACC pin is connected to connector 3, and to turn on the ignition, the pins from the ON1 and ON2 block are connected to the white wire going to the ignition relay and the blue wire, connector 4 in the chip. If the car has a sample ignition switch, without using an ignition relay, then the blue-white wire (to the 6th connector of the chip) must also be connected to terminal ON1 or ON2.

Similarly, the start engine button can be installed on any other car.

This video demonstrates the operating algorithm and all the functionality of this kit:

Nowadays, many foreign automakers equip their cars with a button that starts when pressed. What are the advantages of such a starting system and whether it makes sense to install an engine start button on the engine of your VAZ, we will try to figure it out in this publication. For those car enthusiasts who still want to implement such a system and install a start button on their car, we will tell you about the most accessible and uncomplicated methods for this modification.

How to make a VAZ engine start button yourself

As mentioned above, ways installing the Start Engine button on a VAZ There are many, but there are several nuances that must be taken into account when performing such modifications.

Firstly, there are options for starting the engine from a button with or without a key. Secondly, the engine starts when you press the button once, as well as when you hold it down until the internal combustion engine starts. And thirdly, turning on the ignition can be done with the same engine start button (pressing it once turns on the ignition, pressing and holding the brake pedal a second time starts the engine) and simultaneously turning on the ignition and starter.

Even the most inexperienced auto enthusiast can make and install a primitive VAZ engine start button, but it’s still better to do it Start Engine on a microcontroller with a start delay and timer.

Engine start button paired with ignition key

Before starting this modification, it is worth considering that the cross-section of the button wires must correspond to the cross-section of the wires used in. It is also worth remembering that its design is not particularly intricate, so the design of the engine start button should not be complicated.

The principle of operation of the simplest Start Engine button for a VAZ

  1. Without the ignition key the button does not work
  2. The key must be inserted into the ignition and set to the first position
  3. The engine start button is pressed and held until the power unit is fully started (the button must be locked)
  4. To stop the engine, the ignition key must be turned to position “0”
  5. The button should only work if the ignition key is in position “1”

Instructions for making an engine start button

To implement this modification, you need an ignition relay with a wire block. (4 wires in total, 2 high-current circuits (yellow contacts on the relay itself) and 2 low-current circuits (white contacts).

We throw one of the wires of the high-current circuit onto pin 15 of the ignition switch, and the second into pin 30 of the same lock (in general, one is pink and the other is red).

We throw one of the wires of the low-current circuit to the “-” ground, and the second to the green wire on it “+” appears when the ignition is turned on (done so that without a key the starter does not work by pressing the button) and we interrupt the wire from the relay to the green wire with our button !

Video of how the engine start button works on a VAZ car

Starting the engine with a button has become a popular type of tuning recently. I wanted to make such a trick for myself: simple in implementation, but effective. And it’s not even a matter of show-off, but of objective convenience: I didn’t like holding the key turned out when starting, there was something uncomfortable about it. But there was no time to tinker with such nonsense, so I didn’t get around to it.
As often happens, the situation itself forced us to take action. One day, the return spring in the ignition switch burst, the same one that returns the key to the “Ignition” position after starting the engine. Moreover, it burst so that its fallen piece blocked the rotation of the lock cylinder, and the ignition could not be turned on at all. Naturally, this happened on the road, well, as usual. Immediately on the spot I had to figure out something on how to remove the ignition switch (it’s on bolts with breakaway heads) in order to unlock the steering wheel. Fortunately, this was quite easy to do. The lock was disassembled, the spring was removed, and operation was restored. But it was decided, before completely putting the lock and steering wheel casing in place, to do a push-button start. Because Over time, there was a large shortage, then complex options were shelved, and the simplest way when the ignition is still turned on with the key, and the button only starts the starter. However, this is not such a bad option: the presence of an ignition switch leaves protection through a standard mechanical lock, and also removes the question of how to at least primitively protect the car from starting when it remains unlocked (at home for a short time, somewhere on vacation and etc.) so that anyone foolishly does not start the engine or turn on the ignition.

There is no need to modify the ignition switch itself; all that is needed is to solder 2 wires near the standard connector: to the starter switch wire (red) and to the blue wire. In the photo these are red and blue wires with female connectors, respectively (the remaining wires are needed for other upgrades).

After this, we assemble a simple circuit of a button, relay and resistor. The KD2-22BBR was chosen as a button - suitable in design, pleasant to the touch, and backlit. As it turned out, the backlight LED does not have a limiting resistor, so we calculate the resistor in the usual way, at 12 V. Any relay can be used - the current is planned to be very small, but you need to take into account that when installing a button with a circuit, the relay must fit through the hole for the button.

In addition to the two wires listed above, you will need one more - to connect to the oil pressure sensor. This connection, as well as the relay, is necessary so as not to accidentally turn on the starter on an already running engine.
We fix the assembled circuit on the lower steering wheel casing and place it together with it, and after that we connect the wires to the standard wiring.

So, when the ignition is turned off, the button is not illuminated, pressing it will not lead to anything.

When the ignition is turned on, the button lights up, indicating that starting is possible. Press and hold the button until the engine starts. Then you can either release the button, or, if you don’t release it, the starter will turn off on its own, because The oil pressure will increase and the relay in our circuit will operate. Accordingly, after startup, the button backlight will turn off.

One thing needs to be noted. If you just turned off the engine after a trip and immediately try to start it with a button, nothing may work: the pressure has not dropped yet, and the relay will not work, preventing the button from turning on, and therefore the starter. Keep this in mind.

Modern technologies provide many opportunities for upgrading a car. The engine start button is extremely popular at the moment. It allows you to make operating the machine much more comfortable. One click is enough to move your vehicle.

But only high-class cars are equipped with an engine start button. Because of this, there is a misconception that installing such a device costs a lot of money. In fact, everything can be done with your own hands at minimal cost.

How the start button works

Before installing the engine start button, you need to understand a little about its operation. First of all, this device itself is not self-sufficient. If you install only this gadget, you will still have to open the doors with the key, as a result, precious time and comfort will be lost.

However, opening the doors with a regular key greatly increases the safety of the car. After all, every car enthusiast knows that a combination of electronic and mechanical protection gives the best result.

But if you want to provide yourself with a truly comfortable start of the car, then you will need to install electronic locks on the doors. They will be opened using an electronic key that will hang on your key fob. Moreover, it will be he who will be responsible for activating the ignition system.

Important! If there is no electronic key in the car, the button simply does not activate.

With contactless access, data from the electronic key fob is transferred to the control unit installed in the car. This process can be implemented using two technologies: radio waves and infrared radiation. Although it is worth recognizing that more and more often manufacturers are using alternative methods of data transmission such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

The unlocking system, which allows the engine to start without a button, also includes mechanical protection. Simply put, you will have a regular key for greater security.

Attention! Mechanical system opening is indispensable when the car battery is low. Moreover, in this situation, only with the help of a key can you open the door.

Operating principle

The operation of the electronic key that activates the engine start is quite simple. If the driver is not far from the car, he does not show any activity. When approaching a vehicle, the device is activated.

Antennas are responsible for communication, which are mounted on the door to ensure better signal transmission vehicle. As soon as the driver is in the coverage area, just press the button and the doors will open.

Attention! A button called Start Engine is responsible for starting the engine.

All luxury cars that have an engine start button are equipped with automatic door locking. This is the only way to ensure the full functioning of the security system.

To lock or unlock, simply pull the handle. But at the same time, the electronic key must be with you. This is exactly how modern systems work. Automatic locking is activated when the car reaches a certain speed.

Naturally, installing a luxury push-button engine start system is quite a troublesome and difficult task. But if you just want to start your car by pressing, then this can be done with your own hands.

Installation diagrams

Over the years, car enthusiasts have come up with many DIY engine button installation schemes. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, here are the most popular:

  • A circuit that requires the driver to operate both the key and the engine start button. This system It is highly reliable and works as follows: you scroll the key and then press the key. Typically, such a scheme is installed as additional protection against thieves.
  • Start-up scheme by pressing a button and the gas pedal. First you press the pedal, then the key.
  • A trigger circuit that ensures the system is activated when the brake pedal is pressed.
  • Start via button and clutch. In order for the device to work during installation, you need to connect the sensor to the clutch pedal.
  • Diagram of an engine start button that operates with a delay. This system is considered optimal as it provides maximum reliability and convenience. But in order for it to work, adjustments must be made to other systems of the machine.

As you can see, the start button not only makes it easier to start the machine, but also provides better protection to your car. For greater simplicity, we classify all the above schemes into three types:

  1. The button is responsible for the ignition, and the engine is activated using the pedal.
  2. The activation key is tightly integrated into all other systems of the machine.
  3. The manipulator is responsible for both engine starting and ignition.

The second type is considered the most difficult to install.

Installing a start button

How does a conventional ignition system work?

Before you begin installing the engine start switch, you need to understand how the ignition system works without it. This will allow the device to be integrated as accurately as possible into general scheme.

Naturally, each car may have its own design features. But some parallels can still be drawn. Eg, The wires are connected to the contact group from the starter.

As soon as the key is turned, the contacts close. This requires significant expenditure of electrical energy. As a result this process a spark is formed. Unfortunately, this starting method contributes to the formation of carbon deposits on the contacts, which impairs their performance and reduces the service life of the unit.

Attention! Modern cars use a starting relay; it ensures longer operation of the ignition.

Installation

First you need to understand which contacts are responsible for starting the engine. Once detected, they need to be connected to the key. To do this, disassemble the plastic protection. It's under the steering wheel.

The required connector is in most cases attached to the reverse side. It is fixed with two latches - your task is to remove them. A light press is enough for this.

On older cars without a starter relay, it takes some effort to find the contacts. On the contact group you need to find the two largest cables. In most cases, one of them is red.

In order to make sure making the right choice turn on the ignition. After this, connect the two wires you have chosen, if the starter starts to rotate, then you have found the right wires.

Attention! Usually, in order for the engine to start, you need to hold the button for a while.

Take your time and choose a design that will have anti-vandal protection. It is best that the structure is chrome plated and the main material is metal.

With the relay installed, you will need a tester to find the necessary wires through which you will connect the engine start button. Set the resistance measurement mode and test the wires, those that respond will be closed to ground.

Important! You need to find a wire with a voltage of 12 V. In this case, the ignition must be turned on.

To do this, set the tester to measure voltage. In this case, one dipstick is attached to the car body. On the second cable you need, voltage will appear only when the ignition is on.

Results

As you can see, simply installing a button without integration into all other car systems is not particularly difficult. All you have to do is find the necessary wires and connect them to the button.

If you are a motorist and you are tired of the problems associated with the production of plastic elements of the ignition switch (IS), burns and deformation in the contacts, then we recommend that you find out how to install a function button instead of the ignition switch. It will significantly increase the comfort of ignition control, and will provide an opportunity to once again prove that the stereotype “always carry a key with you” is wrong. A problematic ZZ with its contact group in the car is not at all necessary.

Classic modernization methods

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

So, today there are many universal methods for carrying out such modernization.

1st method

One of the simplest classic options is to install a “start stop” button with a key. This is a semi-modernized scheme that has both its advantages and disadvantages.

The fact is that without a key it will be impossible to start the car. First you need to insert it, then set it to the desired position, and only then use the button to start the internal combustion engine. If you need to turn off the engine, the key turns back.

2nd method

Another tuning method completely eliminates the presence of a key. However, the modernization scheme is more complex; you need to acquire a special relay (the relay model that controls the rear fog lights on VAZ cars is suitable).

If the car has an alarm system, then the button illumination can be powered from it, and not from the battery. Thus, it is possible to ensure that the button lights up immediately after the car is disarmed. The “start stop” button will signal to the driver that the internal combustion engine is ready to start.

As for the specific features of this scheme:

  • As soon as the car is disarmed, a voltage of 12 volts appears on the start button (at the same time the LED lights up);
  • When the driver presses the button and holds it down a little, the relay and starter are activated, and the engine starts;
  • After releasing the button, the starter is turned off, the ignition remains in the working position;
  • When the driver presses the button again, power unit stops;
  • As soon as the car is set to alarm, the voltage is completely removed from the button and the LED goes out.

Important point. When implementing this modernization scheme, which completely eliminates the presence of a key, do not forget about the steering wheel lock. It should be turned off before tuning so that the steering wheel rotates normally.

3-way

The third version of the classic modernization is practically no different from the second, with one small difference. The starter will no longer turn on after pressing the button; only the relay is activated. In order to start the engine, the driver must press one of the pedals (in this case, we connect the brake pedal).

This version of the scheme is typical for most modern foreign cars. And the brake pedal is activated for the sole reason that it has its own sensor. The pedal is depressed and, thereby, the activation of the 5-pin relay is ensured.

Combined rework option (step by step)

Getting ready necessary materials for tuning:

  • Three types of relays: ZPTF, 4- and 5-pin;
  • Several meters of high-quality wiring with a cross-section of more than one millimeter;
  • “Start stop” button;
  • Diode and terminals.

You should be armed with all the tools necessary for a tuner, including pliers, wire cutters, etc.

The modification scheme looks like this.

Everything is carried out according to the diagram, but the diode can be installed in any convenient place.

Ready-made universal kits

The modern market is replete with ready-made universal kits for starting internal combustion engines from a button. They are sold together with protective systems and are suitable for installation in almost all known car models.

Ready-made kits can provide reliable engine starting. Modernization, if carried out correctly, will easily transform the launch system domestic car into a universal and functional element, no different from the standard version of the best foreign cars in the world. However, the kits are not cheap, and if you call a specialist, then together with the installation new system launch will require quite large financial investments. If you know how to install the ignition button, you can save money.

Thus, there are several ways to install a button. Each has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.

  1. With a key. This ignition option requires a key. An old and proven scheme. Plus - ease of installation, minus - again you need to take the key with you. To start the engine, the driver must press a button.
  2. The same option, only without a key. The advantages are obvious, but the disadvantage is the complex installation scheme.
  3. Short press button. It is enough to just hold the button pressed for a second - this will be enough to crank the starter. The advantage of the scheme: the button only gives the starter a command to activate, it rotates until the internal combustion engine starts.
  4. Long press button. The same thing, only the button is held for a longer period of time. The advantage of the scheme is expressed in the fact that the driver himself controls the rotation of the starter. If he releases the button, the starter will stop rotating.

As was written above, in addition to the classic options for using schemes, there are also combined ones. They are often invented out of the blue by amateurs and craftsmen. Some schemes are so successful that they deserve higher approval.

Start stop button: pros and cons

The button is a small product installed instead of the 3Z or in another part of the car interior. To start the motor, just one finger press is enough. It's simple, convenient and original.

Standard buttons on foreign cars function like this: as soon as the car is disarmed, the driver gets inside, presses the brake pedal and presses the button once. After half a second, the power unit starts. To stop the motor, just press the brake and button again.

Often buttons are equipped with LEDs for ease of use. A glowing indicator lets the driver know that the car was started successfully (on some foreign cars, the level of sound insulation of the body is brought to such a level that you can’t even hear inside the cabin whether the engine is running or not).

Advantages and disadvantages

AdvantagesFlaws
1 A light touch is enough to start the engine. To start the car, you need to sit in it and press the brake pedal. Out of habit, many drivers forget about this
2 No more need to carry the ignition key with youThere may be difficulties when installing an alarm with heating. So, you will need at least two keychains - one of them must be given to the masters. They will disassemble it, take out the chip and install it in the car. Power will only be supplied at startup
3 The button can be installed anywhere, including right at hand, which increases ease of useInstalling an alarm on a car with a button usually costs more
4 A number of options are combined with car alarms, immobilizers and other security systems
5 You can lock the car by simply pressing the button on the door, without having to set it to the alarm - this saves time if you leave the car for a short time

Note. There is an opinion that you won’t be able to get into the car if the battery in the key fob runs out. Actually this is not true. It will be enough to place the key fob on the button side, and if the battery dies, then open the car with the key.

Now you know how to install a button instead of the ignition switch. This can be done with your own hands, saving on the services of expensive specialists.
